A former US Navy Seal member who was part of the team that took down Osama Bin Laden in 2011 has shared his recollections of the mission. Matt Bissonette, a seasoned special forces operative, expressed that the magnitude of the operation, known as Operation Neptune Spear, is still sinking in even after 15 years.

Having served in Iraq and Afghanistan extensively, Matt reflected on the events leading up to the operation, starting with the 9/11 attacks that sparked a focused pursuit of Bin Laden. The covert mission involved a 23-member special forces team being swiftly deployed from the US to Pakistan, where Bin Laden was hiding.

Recounting the intense moments during the operation, Matt described the high-security briefing that led to the eventual raid on Bin Laden’s compound. Despite facing challenges such as a helicopter malfunction due to warm weather, the team successfully infiltrated the compound.

Matt vividly remembered the encounter that led to Bin Laden’s demise, including the identification of Bin Laden’s son Khalid and the eventual confrontation with Bin Laden himself. The operation concluded with the retrieval of Bin Laden’s body and crucial evidence before the team evacuated the area.

Post-mission, Matt grappled with the physical toll of his injuries sustained during the operation, which eventually required multiple surgeries. Despite facing scrutiny for disclosing classified information in his initial book under a pseudonym, Matt has since published another book, “No Easy Way,” under his real name, delving into the aftermath of the mission and his personal struggles.

Reflecting on the current state of affairs in the Middle East, Matt emphasized the importance of learning from past mistakes and avoiding further military interventions that could result in unnecessary loss of life. As he continues to share his experiences and insights, Matt hopes that lessons from past conflicts will guide future decision-making to prevent further tragedies.
