Ann Widdecombe tragically lost her life just before her scheduled television appearance, with her body undiscovered for a whole day. The former Tory minister was viciously attacked in her home shortly before she was supposed to join a video call on Channel 5’s Matt Allwright show. Despite messaging a producer at 12.19pm, she failed to respond to a text at 12.48pm. Devon and Cornwall Police disclosed that the fatal incident occurred at 12.30pm on Wednesday at her bungalow on the outskirts of Dartmoor National Park.
Her remains were only found the following day at 11.40am in her kitchen, almost 24 hours after the crime. This delay gave the perpetrator a significant head start, leading to concerns that they might have fled the country. Police decided not to release CCTV images or suspect descriptions at 5.59pm to avoid compromising ongoing investigations or future leads.
Authorities are operating on the belief that Ms. Widdecombe may have interrupted a burglar, resulting in her tragic demise. Despite the arrest of a 26-year-old British man who was later cleared of involvement, a manhunt for the real culprit continues. The victim sustained severe head injuries, and investigators are actively pursuing various leads. ACC Longman hinted at a single suspect, described as a white male.
Ms. Widdecombe, known for her appearances on shows like Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Big Brother, was a respected figure in the political and entertainment spheres. The police urge anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing the importance of not speculating on social media to avoid hindering the investigation and causing distress to the victim’s loved ones.
Authorities clarified that the incident is not linked to terrorism or politically motivated crimes. Local residents expressed shock and concern over the rare occurrence of such a violent crime in their community. Tributes poured in for Ms. Widdecombe, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer and other political figures calling for unity and expressing sympathy for her family.
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage paid his respects to Ms. Widdecombe in Haytor, assuring that there were no indications of prior threats towards her from the party.
