A former nuclear protection specialist from the United States Air Force has labeled the current situation in the Middle East involving Iran as the most perilous security landscape since 1990. Recent events over the weekend saw the US and Israel launching strikes against Iran under Operation Epic Fury in an effort to dismantle the republic’s regime.

The supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was assassinated in Tehran along with several military officials, prompting the republic to retaliate with widespread attacks across the Gulf region. Drones and missiles have been deployed by Iran targeting countries such as Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Jordan, Oman, and Qatar. Tragically, three US service members lost their lives in Kuwait, and an attack drone struck RAF Akrotiri, a British airbase in Cyprus.

Former US Air Force specialist Gene Sticco, who previously oversaw security operations for energy companies like Shell and BHP, expressed concerns about the escalating and unpredictable situation in the Gulf. Describing the conflict as having a larger scope than anything seen since the Gulf War, Gene emphasized the dangerous implications for global security.

In an exclusive interview with The Mirror, Gene cautioned about the fragmented command structure within the IRGC and the independent military actions being taken, underscoring the heightened risk posed by decentralized decision-making. The continuous cycle of retaliatory strikes and escalating tensions, exemplified by the attack on the RAF base in Cyprus, only serves to expand the conflict further.

Gene warned of the potential for each new target to create a fresh front, leading to increased pressure for responses and subsequent escalations. He stressed that the current security environment in the Middle East is the most precarious since 1990, with the conflict rapidly spreading in real-time, unlike previous contained conflicts of the past.
