Frankie Dettori has officially ended his illustrious career with a remarkable victory in Brazil, clinching the initial part of the nation’s Triple Crown. The iconic jockey had initially planned to retire during Champions Day at Ascot in October 2023 but decided to prolong his career in the United States.
Last November, the 55-year-old announced that his racing days would conclude at the Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar, followed by a brief farewell tour in South America culminating at Gavea racecourse in Rio de Janeiro. During the final leg, he triumphed by guiding Speak Alpha and Bet You Can to victory in the Brazilian 2,000 Guineas, known as the Grande Premio Estado do Rio De Janeiro.
This remarkable feat provided Dettori with one last opportunity to showcase his signature flying dismount celebration. Reflecting on his achievement, he expressed his surprise at winning a Group 1 race on his farewell day, stating, “It’s been brilliant. I was very emotional. I enjoyed everything. I’ve had a beautiful career, and I’m grateful I can retire in good health.”
He continued, “I’ve accomplished all my goals as a jockey. While my riding career is over, I remain committed to the sport and will stay involved in racing.” Dettori has embraced a new role as a global ambassador for Kia Joorabchian’s Amo Racing, marking the end of his British Group 1 victories, including his final triumph on King Of Steel in the Champion Stakes.
In a heartfelt message to his supporters on social media, the jockey expressed his deep connection to the sport, acknowledging, “Racing has been my life. I began my journey as a 15-year-old in Italy nearly four decades ago, and horse racing has shaped everything for me. Despite its challenges, I cherish every moment spent in this sport. I’ve had the privilege of traveling the world, meeting remarkable individuals, creating enduring memories, and riding exceptional horses.”
He extended his gratitude to his family for their unwavering support and sacrifices, as well as to the trainers, owners, stable staff, and fellow jockeys who shared his remarkable journey. Dettori concluded by thanking his loyal fans for their unwavering support throughout his career, acknowledging their pivotal role in fulfilling his childhood dream.
The renowned jockey’s retirement marks the end of an era in horse racing, but his legacy and impact on the sport will endure for years to come.
