A prominent Conservative member has alleged that a French warship fired 17 “live rounds” in an attempt to intimidate him while he was filming in the Channel. However, it was later clarified that the incident was part of a separate training exercise.

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp reported that he felt like there were “warning shots or attempted intimidation” directed at him by a naval officer during a TV interview. Despite the loud bangs heard in the background of the video shared by Philp, French authorities explained that the crew was conducting handgun training at the time.

Philp criticized the French authorities for the lack of warning and claimed that the live rounds were fired without any prior notice. The French Maritime Prefecture confirmed that the warship, named Flamant, was engaged in a routine firing exercise off Cape Gris-Nez, which was unrelated to the presence of the British vessel in the area.

The British government has requested an explanation from the French authorities regarding the incident. Philp expressed disbelief in the explanation given by the French and accused them of attempting to intimidate those shedding light on the issue of dangerous crossings in the Channel.

The incident occurred amidst ongoing efforts by the UK and France to address small boat crossings, with a recent deal reached to increase patrols and link payments to results. Despite the challenges, officials are optimistic about the progress being made in reducing the number of crossings and enhancing border security measures.
