“Fridge or Pantry? Survey Finds Food Storage Disputes Among Couples”

Published on

A recent survey reveals that disagreements over where to store common kitchen items like eggs, ketchup, and bread are not uncommon among couples and families. The survey found that two-thirds of respondents have argued at least twice a month in the past year over whether certain foods belong in the fridge or the pantry.

Many people are unsure about the best storage practices for maintaining taste and freshness, with more than three-quarters admitting to uncertainty. While some rely on traditional habits passed down from parents, others seek advice online, with four in 10 turning to the internet for guidance on food storage.

A poll conducted by Bahlsen, a biscuit maker, identified bananas, potatoes, and avocados as top contenders for confusing storage decisions, along with bread, jam, and honey. Food waste expert Kate Hall emphasizes the importance of proper storage, especially during warm weather, noting that factors such as temperature, humidity, and light exposure impact food quality.

According to Kate, refrigerating certain items like apples and potatoes can significantly extend their shelf life. She recommends storing jams and marmalade in the fridge after opening to prevent mold growth. While some condiments are high in sugar or salt, refrigeration can help preserve their flavor and quality.

Eggs can be stored at room temperature in the UK but benefit from consistent temperatures below 20°C. Kate suggests keeping eggs in their original packaging to prevent odor absorption from other fridge items. She also advises refrigerating fresh herbs, berries, and cucumbers for optimal freshness.

Tomatoes should be kept out of the fridge to maintain taste and texture, while chocolate bars may develop a whitish bloom if chilled. Olive oil should be stored in a cool, dark cupboard, and refrigerating honey can cause it to crystallize. Coffee, onions, garlic, and avocados should also be kept away from the fridge until ripe.

Bananas are best left at room temperature to ripen naturally, according to Kate. Understanding proper food storage practices can help minimize waste and ensure the longevity of perishable items.
