“From Reality TV to Politics: Trump’s Impact on Modern Populism”

Published on

In the grand lobby of a towering Fifth Avenue building, where the ceiling hinted at a recent bronzing session, I observed a reality TV personality making a grand entrance into the realm of American politics by descending a luxurious golden escalator.

Back in June 2015, the true significance of Donald Trump’s emergence was underestimated by many. It wasn’t just a show; it was a strategic move that unveiled a calculated and potentially hazardous plan. As he kicked off his White House bid, he portrayed immigrants as criminals and painted grievances as acts of patriotism. The whole scenario felt like a well-scripted drama, almost surreal, with the host of “The Apprentice” seamlessly transitioning into a presidential campaign as if it were a dramatic season finale.

This wasn’t mere theatrics; it marked the beginning of a political onslaught built on division, driven by spectacle, and aimed at perpetuating permanent conflict. The repercussions of his actions continue to reverberate globally, reaching even places like South East Manchester.

Since that pivotal moment, Trump has honed a playbook that reshaped modern populism. He positioned himself as the advocate for the marginalized “forgotten” Americans while demonizing the courts, media, and civil servants as corrupt adversaries. His narrative framed politics as a battle between “the people” and an elitist establishment. Immigration was no longer just a policy issue but a cultural battleground. The border wall morphed into a symbolic icon, and deportations became showcases of strength.

Despite promising to uplift working families’ dignity, Trump’s major legislative accomplishments have disproportionately favored corporations and the affluent. His wealthy associates thrived, some even evading justice, while many workers struggled with stagnant wages and rising living costs, if they were lucky enough to retain their jobs.

Simultaneously, trade conflicts were initiated under the guise of safeguarding domestic industries, tariffs were imposed, and international alliances strained in the name of “America First.” Every setback was attributed to external forces, every critique labeled as sabotage. Those pointing out flaws were vilified, including judges and even Supreme Court justices. Loyalty trumped expertise, and division became the central tenet of governance, producing notable results.

This scenario should serve as a warning to every voter in Gorton and Denton as they head to the polls. Their decision isn’t just about selecting between political parties but about endorsing a similar style of politics rooted in grievances, confrontation, and personal charisma.

The parallels between Trump’s tactics and the strategies endorsed by figures like Nigel Farage and Reform UK are strikingly apparent. Farage has openly admired the U.S. president, echoing his language and tactics, believing that harnessing outrage can translate into power. His team reflects this approach, with individuals like Zia Yusuf and Richard Tice embodying the trajectory towards a Trump-esque style of politics.

The commonality among them is not intricate policy details but rather the allure of political opportunities and the pursuit of the next spotlight moment. The alignment of methods is hard to dismiss.

Farage, a self-proclaimed Trump enthusiast, has long cultivated an outsider persona, positioning himself as a no-nonsense challenger combating the elite establishment in Westminster. Brexit, under his guidance, was framed as a battle for sovereignty against distant bureaucrats, emphasizing themes of betrayal and restoration at the core of his political identity.

Now, immigration forms the crux of Reform UK’s messaging, mirroring Trump’s approach. Calls for stringent migration controls, reinforced border security, and disengagement from international frameworks are pitched as straightforward solutions to intricate issues. Both campaigns elevate immigration from mere policy to a nationalistic litmus test.

Furthermore, the concept of national sovereignty is a shared motif. Trump’s ‘America First’ doctrine prioritized domestic authority over global cooperation, while Farage’s agenda revolves around reclaiming power from European entities. Both express disdain for global institutions, arguing that international agreements disadvantage ordinary citizens.

On the economic front, the parallels become even more evident. Trump’s policies included slashing corporate taxes and dismantling environmental and financial safeguards, akin to Reform UK’s advocacy for lower taxes and extensive deregulation. Both advocate for limited government as a form of liberation, backed by financial support rooted in affluence.

Their stances on energy policy also align, with Trump boosting fossil fuel production and dismantling environmental protections, while Farage and his allies criticize net-zero targets and green levies, portraying environmental caution as an economic impediment.

While policy convergence is notable, the real concern lies in the tone of their politics. Trump excelled in provocation, turning controversy into leverage, weaponizing social media, and transforming politics into a theatrical performance. Farage, too, understands the power of provocative rhetoric and insurgent posturing, where personality eclipses policy, and loyalty outweighs substance.

Having witnessed the aftermath of Trump’s era in the United States, characterized by deep polarization, it’s evident that the approach of stoking anger and division can have enduring consequences. What was once energizing rallies and resonating slogans led to eroded trust
