“Funeral of Slain Iranian Leader Draws Thousands”

Published on

Iran’s top officials made a public appearance on Sunday to participate in funeral prayers for the late Iranian leader, Ali Khamenei, who was assassinated in an airstrike at the onset of the US-Israeli offensive against Iran earlier this year. The large turnout at the funeral reflects a growing sense of security among the populace despite escalating calls for the assassination of US President Donald Trump.

Khamenei’s remains will be transported to various cities in Iran and neighboring Iraq, with plans to parade his casket and others through the streets of Tehran on Monday. Streets, airspace, and daily activities have been suspended by authorities for the mourning period, which will conclude on Thursday when Khamenei is laid to rest at the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad, his birthplace. While the exact number of attendees at the funeral over the weekend was not disclosed, it is estimated to have been in the thousands.

The late Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, wielded authority over Iran for many years with a firm hand. His son, Mojtaba, has assumed the position of the new Supreme Leader following his father’s demise. Amidst the mourning, there have been chants from Iranians expressing a desire to see President Donald Trump dead.

Negotiations are ongoing between Iranian officials to bring an end to the conflict in Iran. The country has long been under the control of strict religious leaders. Khamenei, aged 86, was killed in the initial stages of the war through an airstrike. Despite the turmoil, Iran maintains significant influence over the US, particularly due to its control of the strategic shipping lane, the Strait of Hormuz.

Thousands of Iranians have called for reprisal in the aftermath of the war that targeted their nation. Mourners gathered to pray for the departed Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, during the funeral ceremonies at the Grand Mosalla in Tehran. The future trajectory of Iran remains uncertain following the passing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
