Arit Anderson, known for her role on Gardeners’ World, recently shared insights into a health concern associated with Parkinson’s disease. She revealed her distress a decade ago when her sister Julie was diagnosed with the progressive brain disorder, which affects dopamine-producing neurons.
According to information from the NHS, Parkinson’s disease commonly manifests as tremors, slow movements, and stiff muscles. However, Arit emphasized in a recent interview that there are various other symptoms indicating the complex nature of the condition.
Arit recounted how her sister, who had never been prone to stress, began experiencing anxiety, which is a known symptom of Parkinson’s. She highlighted that the condition can drastically alter a person’s behavior and emotions.
Discussing her own experiences, Arit mentioned designing a garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show to uplift individuals living with Parkinson’s. She explained that the disease affects the brain’s dopamine-producing cells, impacting not only movement but also mood and motor skills.
Studies detailed on Parkinsons.org.uk suggest there are approximately 40 different symptoms associated with Parkinson’s, varying from physical issues like tremors to sleep disturbances and mental health challenges.
The NHS confirms that Parkinson’s patients may face a wide array of symptoms, including depression, anxiety, balance problems, loss of smell, sleep issues, and memory difficulties. The disease stems from a loss of nerve cells in a specific brain region responsible for dopamine production.
While Parkinson’s has no cure, treatments such as therapy, medication, and in some cases, surgery can help manage symptoms. It’s important to remember that anxiety can stem from various factors, and consulting a healthcare professional is advised for any concerns about symptoms.
