Photographer Frederik Ruegger came across the TV show “At Home with the Furys” while browsing TV schedules and was captivated. Being a devoted boxing fan, Gypsy King Tyson Fury shared insights into his life and roots within the Traveller community.

Intrigued by what he saw, Frederik, a German residing in Berlin, decided to travel to Manchester and attend the renowned Appleby Horse Fair, Europe’s largest annual gathering for Gypsy and Traveller communities in Cumbria every June. Equipped with his 28mm camera, he embarked on a two-year journey capturing moments at horse fairs across the UK and Ireland.

Inspired by a traditional folk song he heard at the fair, Frederik titled his forthcoming photography book “A Stranger in This Country,” symbolizing the sense of displacement felt by both Travellers and himself. Building rapport with the community, he gained unprecedented access to their lives, forming close bonds with a particular family who welcomed him into their campside.

By approaching the Travellers with sincerity and respect, Frederik was able to document authentic and intimate moments, showcasing the enduring traditions of the community. Despite using analogue equipment and facing challenges at airport security, the outcome of his work was rewarding.

Expressing admiration for the Travellers and their way of life, Frederik aims to continue his photographic journey, focusing on the growth and evolution of the community across generations. He emphasizes the importance of preserving their traditions and identity.

Frederik’s book, “I am a Stranger in This Country,” published by Kehrer Verlag, offers a glimpse into the world of the Travellers. His dedication and empathy in capturing their story have led to lasting friendships and a deeper understanding of their unique culture.
