Germany’s president has issued a strong warning likening the current global situation to a “den of robbers,” accusing Donald Trump of disregarding international laws that were previously established with the United States’ involvement.
Frank-Walter Steinmeier criticized Trump’s actions, stating that the US President had exceeded acceptable boundaries. In a speech delivered in Berlin, Steinmeier expressed concerns about the erosion of values by the USA, a key ally in shaping the existing world order.
Steinmeier emphasized the importance of preventing a scenario where the most ruthless entities seize power and exploit regions or entire nations for their gain. He highlighted that the world has progressed beyond mere lamentation over the lack of adherence to international law and the weakening of the global order.
The German president also highlighted the plight of medium-sized countries, including Germany, being marginalized in global affairs, while smaller and weaker nations are left vulnerable to exploitation.
Criticism towards Trump intensified when reports emerged of a mission to capture Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro. Additionally, there was growing outrage following discussions around the potential acquisition of Greenland, a Danish territory, and warnings issued to leaders of Colombia and Cuba.
French President Emmanuel Macron echoed concerns about the US deviating from its traditional allies and disregarding international norms. He highlighted the diminishing effectiveness of multilateral institutions and the increasing trend of major powers attempting to dominate global affairs.
Political figures like Keir Starmer, along with European leaders, cautioned the US against interfering in Greenland’s sovereignty, emphasizing that such decisions should be left to the Danish and Greenlandic people. While some MPs called for the US to be excluded from the upcoming World Cup due to Trump’s actions, others urged FIFA to address the violations of international law and threats against various countries.
Labour MP Brian Leishman criticized the international community and sports bodies for what he deemed as inconsistency in addressing breaches of international law. He pointed out the need for uniformity in responses, particularly concerning the recent events involving Venezuela and the treatment of Russia.
The controversy surrounding Trump’s actions has raised significant concerns globally, prompting calls for a unified stance against violations of international law and threats to sovereign nations.
