Global Countries Considering Bans on Social Media for Under-16s

Published on

Countries worldwide are contemplating emulating Australia’s move to test a social media ban for individuals under 16 years old. Australia implemented this ban for teenagers in December, requiring platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, and X to take measures to limit access or face penalties.

The UK government has initiated discussions on banning social media for those under 16, while Denmark, Greece, Spain, and Ireland have explored similar restrictions: Spain and Ireland for under-16s, Denmark and Greece for under-15s, and Austria for under-14s.

Greece’s prohibition on social media for those under 15 is scheduled to commence on January 1, 2027. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized that extended screen time hinders mental relaxation.

Concurrently, the UK government plans to pilot the ban alongside the consultations. The trial will involve 300 teenagers having their social apps disabled, blocked overnight, or limited to one hour’s usage. Technology Secretary Liz Kendall mentioned that the aim is to test various options practically and determine the viability of an Australian-style ban for UK teenagers.

Critics have voiced opposition to the ban, labeling it a quick but ineffective solution that fosters a false sense of security. They advocate for diminishing the financial incentives for social media companies to target and addict young individuals.

While I oppose a blanket ban on social media for under-16s, I believe the focus should be on addressing underlying issues. The addictive nature of social media has had detrimental effects on youth globally, necessitating the removal of addictive features and a return to simpler functionalities.

The UK must answer the crucial question of what alternatives would replace social media for teenagers if a ban is enforced, as spaces for youth interactions are declining rapidly.

Growing up without smartphones and social media, I observed their introduction during my teenage years, coinciding with the disappearance of traditional hangout spots for young people. Reduced investment in youth services has led to the closure of many community spaces, leaving teenagers with limited options.

The Labour government has committed to reopening youth clubs, starting with the establishment of eight ‘Young Futures Hubs’ in various locations. This initiative aims to address the decline in youth services and rebuild community connections for the younger generation.

The absence of physical spaces designed for young individuals is pushing them into adult environments prematurely, blurring the lines between adolescence and adulthood. Until adequate investments are made in creating spaces that cater to teenagers, eliminating the virtual platforms where they socialize would be counterproductive.

Australia’s experience with the ban has raised concerns as young individuals are adapting to alternative platforms not covered by the restrictions. Despite efforts to enforce the ban, accurate age verification remains challenging, allowing many underage users to circumvent the rules.

Before implementing a social media ban for under-16s, the focus should be on providing meaningful alternatives for young people to engage in real-world activities and build community connections. Simply removing access to social media without offering viable alternatives could exacerbate issues such as loneliness and phone addiction among youth.
