‘Relocate for benefits’ initiatives are gaining popularity globally as many countries introduce unique programs to attract individuals to areas facing declining populations and economic challenges.
In 2026, five countries are offering incentives for relocation, providing an opportunity for those looking for a fresh start to consider their options. These attractive relocation packages aim to increase the population in specific regions and revitalize local economies. These areas often have aging workforces, prompting the implementation of these schemes.
For instance, since 2018, Albinen, a picturesque mountain village in Switzerland, has been luring individuals with incentives to move there. Adults can receive up to 25,000 Swiss francs (about £23,600 in 2026), while children can get up to 10,000 Swiss francs (approximately £9,400) to encourage relocation. Families can potentially receive a total of 70,000 Swiss francs (around £66,100) to assist in home purchases or starting a new life in the village.
To qualify for the Albinen program, applicants must be under 45 years old, commit to residing in the village for a minimum of 10 years, own a property valued at 200,000 Swiss francs or more, and be either Swiss citizens or hold a C Residence Permit.
In another initiative, the Chilean government is offering equity-free grants of up to £74,000 to tech-focused start-ups willing to establish their operations in Chile. This program, open to individuals from any country, provides a two-year work visa along with networking opportunities, office space, mentorship, and funding support for business development.
Sardinia, an enchanting Italian island, is also enticing individuals to relocate by offering grants of up to €15,000 (about £13,000) per household for settling in smaller communities with fewer than 3,000 inhabitants. This funding can be used for purchasing or renovating homes, with additional incentives for couples starting families in these areas.
Additionally, the Irish government’s ‘Our Living Islands’ initiative aims to support communities on remote Irish islands by providing eligible applicants with relocation grants ranging from €50,000 to €80,000 (£43,000 – £70,000) to restore derelict properties and contribute to these island communities.
Portugal’s Emprego Interior Mais program, launched in 2020, offers a one-time cash payment of up to approximately €5,000 (£4,300) to assist with relocation expenses for eligible participants planning to move to rural regions within the country. Additional financial support is provided based on household size, with relocation requirements including permanent residency, new employment contracts, or business establishment in designated rural areas.
