Google has issued a crucial alert for MacBook users who utilize the Chrome browser, stating that support for Chrome on older macOS versions will be discontinued. While Chrome will remain operable on MacBooks and iMacs, updates and security patches will be blocked, potentially leaving users susceptible to cyber threats, bugs, and malfunctions.
The discontinuation of Chrome updates on Macs running macOS 12 (Monterey) or earlier has been announced by Google. Users on these platforms will need to upgrade to a newer operating system, such as macOS Ventura, to receive browser support. However, some Mac models, like iMacs predating 2017 and MacBook Airs bought before 2018, may not be compatible with Ventura, requiring affected users to consider purchasing a new device to continue using Chrome securely.
The change is scheduled to take effect in July of this year, with Google specifying that Chrome 150 is the final version supporting macOS 12 (Monterey). Subsequently, Chrome 151, set for release on July 28, 2026, will mandate macOS 13 Ventura or later for continued compatibility. Google emphasizes the importance of transitioning to a supported macOS version to ensure access to the latest security updates and Chrome features.
Users are advised that although older Chrome versions will function, no further updates will be available for those on macOS 12 (Monterey). It is recommended that users currently on this operating system make the switch to macOS 13 Ventura or a newer version promptly to maintain access to security updates and Chrome enhancements.
