“Grammar School Teacher’s Air Rage on EasyJet Flight”

Published on

A physical education teacher from a prestigious grammar school in Northern Ireland appeared in court for his actions on an easyJet flight returning from Egypt. Peter Shepherd, the teacher in question, was involved in an incident of disruptive behavior and air rage onboard the plane, leading to police intervention upon landing at Belfast International Airport.

During a court hearing at Antrim Magistrates Court in Ballymena, it was revealed that Shepherd had pleaded guilty to charges stemming from the incident on the flight, which occurred on April 20 the previous year. The charges included assaulting a female cabin crew manager, engaging in disorderly behavior, being intoxicated on an aircraft, and displaying threatening and abusive conduct.

The prosecuting lawyer detailed how Shepherd’s disruptive behavior towards the cabin crew prompted a fellow passenger to inquire about restraining him. The court was informed that Shepherd physically assaulted the cabin manager by pressing his forehead against her face and shouting abuse at her during the altercation.

Although Shepherd initially denied the allegations during police interviews, he admitted to consuming alcohol before boarding and drinking from a hip flask while in the air. In mitigation, Shepherd’s legal representative emphasized his client’s acknowledgment of wrongdoing and expressed feelings of shame, regret, and remorse for his actions.

Acknowledging the impact of Shepherd’s behavior on his own children who were also on the flight, Judge Broderick highlighted the seriousness of such conduct on an aircraft due to the confined space and lack of escape options for passengers. Despite potential ramifications on Shepherd’s employment, the judge imposed a 120-hour community service order as an alternative to imprisonment, along with a fine and compensation payment to the assaulted cabin crew manager.

The court disclosed that Shepherd’s employment status would be reviewed by the Board of Governors at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution following the conclusion of the legal proceedings.
