A grandfather revived his wife on the side of a busy highway after she suffered a medical emergency while traveling in their vehicle. Paul Cutler and his wife, Suzanne, were heading back to Dartford following a family event when he noticed Suzanne was unresponsive. Paul made a swift stop on the M56 near Manchester and administered CPR to Suzanne on a grassy area beside the road.
Their daughter Annie, who was also in the car during the incident, contacted emergency services for help. Paul, a Dartford council member and former mayor, mentioned that the situation unfolded rapidly, and he relied on what he had seen on TV to perform CPR. Despite the challenging circumstances with heavy traffic passing by, an air ambulance landed nearby as they feared for Suzanne’s life.
Upon the arrival of paramedics, they took charge of resuscitation efforts using a defibrillator to revive Suzanne, who had experienced a cardiac arrest. Paul recounted the moment when he heard that Suzanne had regained a pulse after the third attempt by the medical team.
Accompanied by her daughter Annie, Suzanne was transported to Wythenshaw Hospital in Greater Manchester for specialized care. Paul followed in a support ambulance to be by her side as she underwent treatment and was placed in an induced coma in the ICU.
Following a stabilizing period in the hospital and positive test results, Suzanne was gradually awakened from the coma. Despite the initial risk of potential brain damage due to oxygen deprivation, Suzanne’s condition improved, and she was discharged from the hospital after a 25-day stay, just a week before Christmas.
Paul expressed his astonishment at the critical timing of the CPR efforts and stressed the importance of immediate intervention in such emergencies. He also highlighted Suzanne’s previous health challenges, including a heart-related issue resulting from cancer treatment and a recent hospitalization with pneumonia.
Motivated by their experience, Paul is on a mission to raise awareness about CPR and the necessity of defibrillators in educational institutions. He has initiated campaigns and advocated for equipping schools with life-saving devices to prevent tragedies like the one his family narrowly avoided.
As Suzanne continues her recovery, supported by the implantation of an ICD device for cardiac monitoring, the Cutler family is taking time to relax and engage in light physical activities together. Paul’s dedication to promoting CPR education and access to medical equipment underscores his commitment to preventing similar emergencies in the future.
