Nadiya Hussain, the winner of the Great British Bake Off in 2015, has opened up about how watching the show triggers anxiety due to her past experiences on the program. She revealed that she has been dealing with anxiety attacks since childhood, attributing them to her time on the show.
Despite her success on Bake Off, Nadiya shared that she finds it challenging to watch the series now. She transitioned into a career as a cookbook author and host of cooking shows on BBC after her Bake Off victory.
In an interview with the i newspaper, Nadiya expressed how revisiting Bake Off brings back feelings of anxiety. She disclosed her struggles with anxiety from a young age, which she coped with through cooking and baking as a way to calm her mind.
Nadiya explained that her passion for food has been a significant source of support in managing her anxiety, leading her to pursue a career in the culinary industry. However, her broadcasting role at the BBC was unexpectedly terminated in 2025, prompting her to shift gears and become a teaching assistant at a primary school.
Shortly after starting her new job, Nadiya made the difficult decision to leave due to health issues, including fibromyalgia, which compromised her immune system. She shared her health challenges in a heartfelt Instagram video, emphasizing the toll that working in a school environment took on her well-being.
