A video capturing a large shark circling a boat off the coast of Portugal has raised concerns. The shark, possibly a great white measuring between 10ft and 13ft, was spotted around two nautical miles from the renowned surfing area of Nazaré. The footage, taken during an excursion between São Martinho do Porto and Nazaré and shared on Instagram by Ocean Adventures on July 25, shows the shark approaching the boat and swimming around it briefly. The operator of the boat tours, Nuno Santos, indicated that the shark’s coloring suggested it could be a great white.
Despite the shark’s presence, the boat occupants did not feel threatened as the animal exhibited calm behavior and curiosity. The video, showing the shark’s dorsal fin breaking the water’s surface, has garnered over 670,000 views on social media. While great white sharks are known to cover vast distances in search of suitable environments and prey, sightings near mainland Portugal are considered uncommon. After its brief encounter with the boat, the shark eventually swam away into deeper waters.
