“Green Candidate’s Upset Win in Labour Stronghold”

Keir Starmer is facing calls to view Labour’s by-election setback as a crucial wake-up call following the surprising victory of Green candidate Hannah Spencer in a constituency traditionally held by Labour for almost a century.

In the Gorton and Denton by-election, Labour slipped to third place as Spencer secured a decisive win with 14,980 votes, creating a substantial lead of 4,402 votes. The Reform candidate, Matt Goodwin, secured second place with 10,578 votes, while Labour’s Angeliki Stogia trailed in third with 9,364 votes.

This win marked the Greens’ first-ever victory in a parliamentary by-election, causing frustration within Labour ranks for losing a seat they previously held with a significant majority of 13,413 votes in 2024. Criticism also arose over the decision to prevent Andy Burnham from contesting in the election.

While Keir Starmer remained resolute, vowing to fight tirelessly for societal change, former Deputy PM Angela Rayner emphasized the urgent need for the Government to heed the by-election defeat as a call to action. She stressed the importance of listening to voters and delivering on promised reforms to regain trust.

Joanne Thomas, General Secretary of Usdaw, a typically supportive union of Starmer, emphasized the disillusionment of voters with the current Labour government’s performance and called for a reevaluation to reconnect with the electorate.

Various voices within Labour, including Fire Brigades Union chief Steve Wright and Labour MP Karl Turner, expressed concerns over the party’s future electoral prospects and the need for immediate strategic adjustments to prevent further losses.

In response, the Prime Minister acknowledged the disappointing outcome but reaffirmed his commitment to fighting for change for the benefit of the people. He underscored the importance of combating political extremities that could divide the nation.

Despite the setback, Downing Street rejected calls for a major policy shift and stressed the necessity for Labour to focus on delivering for the mainstream populace. The government source highlighted the importance of addressing pressing issues like the cost of living and avoiding distractions to stay aligned with the public’s priorities.

As Spencer celebrated her victory and prepared to assume her role as the Greens’ fifth MP, she pledged to advocate for those struggling with financial burdens and champion the idea that hard work should lead to a fulfilling life, not just benefitting the wealthy.
