Green Party leader Zack Polanski, an advocate for loosening restrictions on illegal drugs, revealed that he has never consumed drugs or alcohol in his lifetime. Polanski criticized politicians who have confessed to drug use while enforcing laws that criminalize drug users, calling for a change in the system to address drug issues in the country.

During an interview on the BBC’s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg program, Polanski emphasized his belief in individual freedom, stating that although he has refrained from drug and alcohol use, he supports people’s rights to make their own choices. He reiterated his stance on legalizing all drugs, shifting the conversation to the need for a public health approach to alcohol, which he considers a potentially dangerous substance.

Polanski stressed the importance of a public health strategy to tackle drug-related harm, citing the input of healthcare experts from the National Health Service who have deemed the current system ineffective. He emphasized the need for drug legalization and regulation, suggesting that individuals struggling with drug issues should seek assistance from healthcare professionals.

When asked if his abstinence from drugs was a principled stand, Polanski explained that it was not, attributing it to his upbringing where sobriety felt necessary among friends who indulged in drinking and drug use. He expressed support for individuals who choose to use substances safely while emphasizing the importance of providing support for those who are at risk.

Polanski criticized past governments for their contradictory approach to illicit drugs, pointing out the disparity between politicians openly admitting drug use and the incarceration of individuals, particularly young, Black, and Brown individuals, for similar offenses.
