Greggs enthusiasts may soon have the option to buy sausage rolls and other pastry treats from a vending machine. The bakery chain is considering introducing “unattended retail solutions,” which will involve both automated and manual vending options, according to Richard Hutton, Greggs’ chief financial officer.
No specific launch date or locations have been disclosed yet. This development follows the successful opening of three smaller Greggs Bitesize shops. Greggs recently reported a 17.9% decrease in statutory pre-tax profits to £167.4 million for the year ending December 27, compared to the previous year.
The drop in profits was attributed in part to challenging market conditions and unusually hot weather. Despite this, Greggs expanded its shop network to 2,739 locations with 121 net store openings in 2025. The company aims to open around 120 more stores this year, with long-term plans to exceed 3,000 UK shops.
Greggs’ CEO, Roisin Currie, anticipates that easing inflationary pressures will lead to increased consumer spending in the coming months. However, she acknowledged that the market remains tough for customers, expressing readiness for another challenging year ahead.
Greggs also announced that it does not intend to raise prices further this year after recent adjustments. Prices of items like the sausage roll and latte were increased, but some meal deals remained unchanged. Additionally, Greggs shared that over 20,000 patrons have visited The Golden Flake Tavern, the company’s first pub concept selling beer, located in Newcastle’s Fenwick department store. The establishment has seen strong sales of beverages and dishes, with the Sausage Roll & Mash being a customer favorite.
