A man has been sentenced to prison for strangling his Grindr date during a deadly ‘extreme’ sexual encounter. The victim, Michael Barron, who had appeared in guest roles in popular TV shows like Hollyoaks and Emmerdale, was invited to the perpetrator’s flat after exchanging explicit messages on the dating app.
Josh Baxter, 28, initially denied charges of manslaughter, intentional strangulation or suffocation, and unlawfully inflicting grievous bodily harm. However, a jury found him not guilty of manslaughter but convicted him of intentional strangulation or suffocation and unlawfully inflicting grievous bodily harm. Baxter had restrained Michael with rope and suffocated him for over thirty minutes.
Following Michael’s tragic death, his mother paid a heartfelt tribute to him, recalling him as her “best friend” and a person who brought light into her world. She expressed deep sorrow over the loss, emphasizing the irreplaceable part of her that died with her son.
During the trial, Baxter claimed the neck injury was accidental and that their activities were consensual. However, evidence showed that a month before the incident, Baxter was warned about the dangers of choking, but he disregarded the advice.
After the fatal encounter, Baxter ordered food and engaged with other individuals on Grindr. He later noticed Michael’s condition deteriorating, leading him to conduct online searches about signs of life and breathing.
The sentencing judge criticized Baxter for disregarding warnings and engaging in reckless behavior that led to Michael’s death. Prosecutors highlighted Baxter’s specific sexual interests and discussions with Michael about their preferences.
In closing arguments, Baxter’s defense emphasized that any harm caused was unintended and not anticipated. However, prosecutors argued that Baxter should have foreseen the risks involved in their activities.
The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of engaging in risky sexual behavior without considering the potential dangers.
