NATO fighter jets were deployed over European airspace in response to unidentified drones breaching Latvian territory and targeting an oil depot. The unmanned aircraft traveled approximately 40 miles into Latvia, with one drone crashing at an oil storage facility in Rēzekne, causing damage to four empty oil tanks.

Authorities are investigating whether the drone incidents were deliberate actions by either Russian forces or Ukrainian UAVs that veered off course due to electronic warfare disruptions while conducting operations in Vladimir Putin’s domain. Residents in the Latgale region, bordering Russia, were alerted to potential airspace threats and received mobile notifications early in the morning, prompting precautions like staying indoors and the closure of schools in affected districts.

Defense Minister Andris Sprūds confirmed his immediate response to the situation in Rēzekne, emphasizing the complexity and ongoing threat. He highlighted the involvement of NATO fighters as part of the Baltic Air Policing mission, stressing the need to enhance the functions of Baltic Air Policing due to the continued regional implications of Russia’s activities in Ukraine.

The incident occurs amidst growing concerns of Russia testing NATO’s determination through orchestrated provocations in the Baltic states, including Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia. Russia has made unfounded allegations that the Baltic countries allowed Ukrainian drones to target oil facilities near St. Petersburg, a claim refuted by the accused nations along with Finland.

Recent warnings from a Russian-language military channel, Volya, comprising experts from various countries, raised alarms about Russia’s purported plans to invade the Baltic states, posing a significant challenge to Western powers. This potential move by Vladimir Putin could serve as a test to NATO’s commitment in defending these smaller member states amid fears of escalating into a nuclear conflict.

Volya’s sources within the Russian Ministry of Defence suggested a progression in Putin’s invasion strategies against the Baltic states, aiming not to instigate a direct war with NATO but to create internal strife within the alliance by targeting Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania. The Russian leadership anticipates that major European nations may hesitate to confront a nuclear-armed Russia without explicit support from the United States, counting on the reluctance of European powers to engage in a conflict over the Baltic states.
