“Homeland Security Officer Applauds After Protester’s Fatal Shooting”

Published on

A video circulating widely on social media depicts a member of the US Department of Homeland Security applauding shortly after the fatal shooting of protester Alex Jeffrey Pretti in Minneapolis. The officer, dressed in a police vest over a black hoodie, paused near the area where Pretti was held by Border Patrol agents when a gunshot was heard, prompting the officer to stop.

Subsequent shots were fired rapidly as another Border Patrol agent continued shooting. The officer in the video then clapped three times before stepping back and walking away from the scene. In a separate video shared online, a different federal agent appeared to disarm Pretti just before the fatal incident. The agent, seemingly empty-handed, reached towards Pretti’s lower back, where a firearm was allegedly holstered. Afterward, the agent ran away holding what looked like a gun, possibly Pretti’s legally owned semi-automatic handgun.

Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino stated in a press conference that agents were trying to arrest Jose Huerta-Chuma, an illegal immigrant from Ecuador, when Pretti intervened. The death of Pretti, 37, led to more protests in Minneapolis and sparked online outrage. Officials in the Trump administration quickly portrayed Pretti as the aggressor, with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem claiming Pretti approached immigration officers with a gun. However, videos from the scene show a physical altercation but no clear evidence of Pretti wielding the handgun he was licensed to carry.

Pretti’s family condemned his death as a “murder,” accusing the Trump administration of spreading false information about him. The incident has added tension to the GOP’s support for gun rights, as Pretti was reportedly armed, although no public videos show him holding a weapon. Despite having a permit to carry a gun, questions have been raised by administration officials about why he was armed. This debate within the GOP contrasts with their traditional support for the Second Amendment.

Following Pretti’s killing, gun rights advocates emphasized the legality of carrying firearms during protests. The Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus highlighted that individuals have the right to bear arms, including during protests and while exercising their First Amendment rights.

The incident has stirred controversy amidst a politically charged atmosphere, with implications for the GOP’s stance on gun rights and law enforcement actions.
