Households facing a significant increase in essential bills will be hit with nearly £7 billion more annually starting next week. The surge will amount to an average of £214 per family for water, council tax, broadband, mobile bills, and TV licenses. Dubbed “awful April,” this rise in costs comes at a challenging time due to the impact of “Trumpflation” on many families, with drivers feeling the pinch at the fuel pumps and home loan costs soaring.

Despite the overall increase, there is some relief for energy customers as millions will see a decrease in bills next month. However, there is a possibility of a spike in July if the conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran persists. This slight relief is countered by the rising costs in water, council tax, broadband, mobile bills, and TV licenses, which will collectively add £6.85 billion to household expenses annually.

Water bills in England and Wales are set to rise by 5.4% in April, equivalent to a £33 yearly increase for the average household. Council tax letters have been issued, with the majority of local authorities planning to increase rates by up to 4.99%. Additionally, mobile and broadband providers are hiking bills by £1 to £4 per month, and the TV license fee will rise from £174.50 to £180.

Car tax rates are also increasing, with the standard road tax rate for post-April 2017 vehicles rising from £195 to £200. Moreover, air passenger duty will surge by 15% in April, impacting all flight passengers. Despite these rising costs, welfare payments will see an increase of 3.8% from April, with the state pension also rising by 4.8%.

On a positive note, regulated train fares have been frozen, and there will be a rise in the minimum wage from April 1, benefiting millions of low-paid workers. However, with various essential expenses on the rise, many households will need to budget carefully to manage the increased financial burden.
