An inquest into the death of toddler Preston Davey is set to resume, potentially leading to scrutiny of various public bodies. Senior coroner Alan Wilson of Blackpool and Fylde indicated that there are grounds to restart the proceedings, pending input from legal representatives of public entities. The inquiry aims to shed light on the actions and oversights of authorities in a comprehensive public hearing involving Preston’s family.

Prior to his tragic demise in July 2023, young Preston had been under the care of multiple professionals, including medical personnel, social workers, and welfare officers. Despite being taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital three times before his passing, the circumstances leading to his murder raised concerns about the adequacy of the care he received.

Following the conviction of Preston’s adoptive parents, the inquest initially opened was put on hold during the police investigation. The possible revival of the inquest awaits a decision from Mr. Wilson, who will assess if all relevant aspects have been covered during the preceding criminal trial.

Meanwhile, the Oldham Safeguarding Children’s Partnership has recommenced its review into Preston’s case, delayed due to the criminal proceedings. The completion of this review is anticipated in January 2027, potentially delaying the inquest until its conclusion.

During a recent hearing, discussions revolved around the legal representation of individuals and entities involved if the inquest progresses. Notably, Preston’s biological mother and grandmother, Sara and Debbie Davey, alongside his father, Gary Nolan, were represented by legal counsel.

Tragically, Preston, just 13 months old at the time, fell victim to his adoptive father Jamie Varley, who, along with his partner John McGowan-Fazakerley, subjected the toddler to appalling abuse, leading to his untimely death. Varley received a whole-life order for murder and numerous other offenses, while McGowan-Fazakerley was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

The hearing was adjourned until October, with Mr. Wilson expressing condolences to Preston’s father as the anniversary of the young child’s passing approaches.
