“Inside the Secret World of Britain’s Nuclear Submarines”

Published on

Britain’s nuclear-armed submarines’ locations are rigorously kept confidential, with only a select few individuals privy to their whereabouts. A Vanguard-Class submarine, part of the fleet responsible for carrying the nation’s nuclear deterrent, maintains a constant presence at sea, poised to launch Trident missiles under the direction of the Prime Minister.

During its deployment, only four individuals onboard are aware of the submarine’s course, ensuring its location remains undisclosed. Operating silently underwater, the vessel maneuvers discreetly to evade detection by potential adversaries, communicating solely to maintain its stealth.

Recently, The Mirror had a rare opportunity to accompany the Prime Minister on a visit to a submarine upon its return to UK waters following a lengthy 206-day mission, referred to as “story X” for security reasons. The journey involved a clandestine boat excursion in the early morning, culminating in the sighting of the surfaced submarine against the Scottish coastline.

Upon boarding the vessel, the reporter navigated through a series of compartments illuminated by artificial lighting, witnessing key components of the submarine’s infrastructure, such as the communications hub and the control room equipped with an array of screens and operational controls. Notably, a secure safe containing a crucial letter from the Prime Minister, outlining directives in the event of a catastrophic scenario, was highlighted during the tour.

The crew, comprising 160 members, operates in shifts, enduring extended periods without exposure to natural light. To combat the effects of extended dark periods, crew members receive SAD lamps and vitamin D supplements. Additionally, the routine onboard includes scheduled meals, exercise facilities furnished with running and rowing machines, and recreational activities like football sweepstakes.

Despite the close quarters and limited communication with the outside world, the submariners form strong bonds within their isolated community. Messages from family members are received weekly, though responses are not possible, leading to prolonged intervals without direct contact. The sacrifices made by the crew and their families are evident, with instances of life-altering news being delivered while on patrol, underscoring the challenges faced during lengthy deployments.
