Iran Cracks Down on Information Flow Amid Nationwide Turmoil

Published on

Iranian authorities have ramped up efforts to curb the dissemination of information regarding nationwide turmoil, both within the country and globally. Reports indicate that security forces in Tehran are conducting house-to-house searches, seizing satellite dishes and CCTV footage to identify protesters and prevent the spread of information.

Undercover agents from the Revolutionary Guard have reportedly masqueraded as utility workers to gain entry into homes and confiscate satellite equipment, as disclosed by Iran International. This crackdown on satellite devices follows a countrywide telecommunications shutdown that commenced on January 8. With phone networks disrupted, satellite-powered devices have become the sole means of communication, compounded by a nationwide internet blackout exceeding 100 hours offline.

Internet monitoring group NetBlocks confirmed the 100-hour digital blackout as of Monday evening, local time. The widespread communication blackout has instilled heightened fear and public unease among Iranians, both domestically and abroad. Human Rights Watch Executive Director Philippe Bolopion criticized Iran for implementing the blackout to conceal disturbing reports of security forces allegedly perpetrating large-scale killings of protesters.

Expressing deep concern for individuals detained by Iranian authorities, Bolopion urged urgent intervention by the UN Security Council and the Human Rights Council to address the crisis and hold Iran accountable. UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper denounced the ongoing violence in Iran and engaged in discussions with her Iranian counterpart, emphasizing the imperative to end violence, uphold fundamental rights, and ensure the safety of British nationals.

In response to escalating violence and protests, the US Virtual Embassy Iran advised American citizens to leave the country promptly using personal arrangements, independent of US government assistance. Various border crossings remain accessible for departure, with specific guidelines for entry into neighboring countries. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump received briefings from senior officials on potential actions, including military operations, cyber tactics, and psychological support for protesters.

Reports suggest that cyber and psychological operations may complement traditional military measures, in what military strategists term integrated operations. While no definitive decision has been reached, diplomatic channels remain open for dialogue, as per CBS sources.
