Iran has issued a fresh warning of potentially blocking a key trade route by leveraging Houthi forces, in a move that could have severe repercussions on the global economy. This threat comes amidst escalating tensions in the Middle East, with the Strait of Hormuz already under intense scrutiny for disrupting maritime traffic.
The Iranian government has maintained a firm control over the vital Strait of Hormuz, deploying naval mines that have disrupted international trade and led to a surge in fuel prices. Now, there are concerns that Iran might also target the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a critical passage connecting Europe and Asia.
According to an anonymous military source quoted by Iran’s Tasnim news agency, potential attacks on ships passing through the Bab al-Mandab Strait could be launched in response to perceived US provocations on Iranian territory or islands. The United States has been bolstering its military presence in the region, with the deployment of combat forces and Marines to counter any threats from Iran.
Despite these military movements, there is uncertainty about whether President Trump will resort to military action to ensure the security of shipping routes and deter further Iranian aggression against Gulf Arab states. The Bab al-Mandab Strait, situated between Djibouti and Yemen, has previously been targeted by Iran-aligned Houthi rebels, adding to the volatile situation in the region.
In a statement to Tasnim, an Iranian military source emphasized the readiness to respond to any enemy actions, warning of potential surprises to thwart hostile moves. Meanwhile, Yemen’s Houthi rebels have so far refrained from active involvement in the broader conflict, citing concerns over internal divisions, leadership safety, and arms supplies as factors influencing their stance.
