Iran has issued a concerning threat directed towards a key ally of the UK. The Iranian regime has labeled Ukraine as a “legitimate target” for backing Israel. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has previously extended support to Middle Eastern nations facing threats by leveraging his country’s expertise in drone defense. Zelensky revealed that nearly a dozen countries have sought assistance from Kyiv to counter Shahed-type drones amidst Iran’s military actions.
Ebrahim Azizi, the head of Iran’s parliamentary National Security Commission, has asserted that Ukraine’s support for Israel makes it a justifiable target. According to Azizi, Ukraine’s backing of Israel has entangled it in the ongoing conflict, thereby legitimizing Iran’s targeting of Ukrainian territory under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.
Ukraine has honed its capabilities in drone defense due to its ongoing conflict with Russia. Following Russia’s invasion over four years ago, Ukraine has endured more than 57,000 Shahed drone attacks from its neighbor. In response to joint US-Israeli strikes, Iran has retaliated by deploying similar drones in the Middle East.
Zelensky highlighted the significant cost disparity between Patriot air defense missiles, priced at up to £3 million, and Shahed drones, which cost around £100,000 each. He mentioned that the United States produces around 60-65 Patriot missiles monthly.
Ukraine has spearheaded the development of cost-effective drone interception technologies, some priced at a few thousand pounds, revolutionizing air defense strategies. Zelensky suggested that the unfolding conflict in the Middle East might lead to a partnership between American officials and Ukraine for drone production.
Recently, Zelensky disclosed that multiple countries, including the United States, have reached out to Ukraine seeking assistance in countering Iranian drones. He confirmed discussions with leaders from the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait regarding potential collaboration.
Zelensky emphasized that Ukrainian aid in thwarting Iranian drones would only be provided if it does not compromise Ukraine’s own defenses and if it bolsters Kyiv’s diplomatic efforts to halt the Russian invasion. He reiterated Ukraine’s commitment to defending those who support Ukraine in achieving a just resolution to the conflict with Russia.
