Iranian Gun Boats Target Ships in Strait of Hormuz

Published on

The Iranian gun boats targeted commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz today following the country’s decision to close the strait in response to what they perceived as a US blockade amounting to “maritime robbery”.

An incident occurred when a container ship was struck by an “unknown projectile” around 12:25 pm UK time, shortly after reports emerged that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had fired on a tanker. A cruise ship captain also reported observing a splash near the vessel about three nautical miles east of Oman around 1 pm UK time.

These events were confirmed by the UK Maritime Trade Operations Centre, labeling the cruise ship incident as “suspicious activity.” The incidents occurred amidst reports that US troops are gearing up to board oil tankers and seize vessels connected to Iran in international waters in the upcoming days, following escalating tensions between Iranian authorities and US President Donald Trump.

During a White House press conference, Trump criticized Iranian leaders and emphasized the need to confront them. He mentioned ongoing negotiations and warned that if no deal is reached before the ceasefire ends next week, military action could resume.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei asserted that the country’s navy is prepared to defeat its adversaries, while the Supreme National Security Council vowed to vigorously defend Iran’s interests without compromise. They emphasized their control over the Strait of Hormuz until a lasting peace is achieved.

Iran rejected Trump’s claims about negotiations, dismissing his statements as false. The closure of the strait, a crucial route for about 20% of the world’s oil trade, poses economic risks, prompting calls for its full reopening and the restoration of global shipping operations.

The ongoing conflict has sparked concerns about potential shortages and price hikes in various sectors, including aviation fuel, food production, and hospitality. Governments are preparing contingency plans to address potential disruptions caused by the strait’s closure and ensure the stability of critical supplies.

Energy experts warn of an impending global energy crisis due to the conflict, with implications for regions heavily reliant on Middle Eastern energy sources. The situation remains volatile, with international efforts focused on de-escalating tensions and preserving stability in the region.
