Irish Actress Brenda Fricker Honored in Dublin

Published on

Mourners, including renowned actor Brendan Gleeson, gathered in Dublin to pay their respects to the late Oscar-winning actress Brenda Fricker as her funeral commenced. The 81-year-old actress, who was the first Irish woman to win an Academy Award for acting, received the best supporting actress accolade for her portrayal of Daniel Day-Lewis’ mother in the film “My Left Foot.”

Fricker’s passing marked the fourth instance of an Irish individual winning an Academy Award, following George Bernard Shaw, Barry Fitzgerald, and Josie MacAvin in various categories. Her legacy paved the way for other Irish talents like Glen Hansard, who also recently passed away, to achieve Oscar success, with Hansard clinching the award for best original song in 2007 for ‘Falling Slowly’ from the movie “Once.”

Brendan Gleeson, known for his role in “The Banshees of Inisherin,” was among the many attendees at the Dublin funeral, held on August 6th. The procession, which included Fricker’s coffin draped in the Dublin flag, made its way to St Catherine’s Church, with President Catherine Connolly represented by Captain Brian Clarke.

Children outside the church displayed drawings of Fricker as the Pigeon Lady from “Home Alone 2,” along with a touching tribute from local poet Sarah Conway. The priest, Eoin Thynne, emphasized celebrating Fricker’s impactful life, urging attendees to remember her with joy and fond memories rather than sorrow.

Fricker’s close friend, Liz Duffy, expressed that the actress would have preferred smiles and laughter in remembrance of her, having passed away after a period of ill health. In addition to her notable roles in “My Left Foot” and “Home Alone 2,” Fricker’s portrayal of Megan Roach in the BBC medical drama “Casualty” further showcased her versatility as an actress.

Her agent, Phil Belfield, lauded Fricker as a “legend,” highlighting her irreplaceable impact on the film and television industry. The funeral service honored Fricker’s remarkable career and enduring influence, emphasizing the lasting legacy she leaves behind in the hearts of fans worldwide.
