The Israeli government has issued a warning of escalating “targeted strikes” on Gaza unless Hamas takes immediate action to prevent the launching of kites towards Israel, a practice carried out by Palestinians, including children.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a statement shared on a social media platform on Sunday, highlighted the concern over drones, balloons, and kites launched from Gaza into Israel. He emphasized that if these launches persist, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) will intensify targeted strikes against those responsible and evacuate civilians from areas used for launching these devices.

Netanyahu underscored Israel’s commitment to ensuring the safety of its communities and citizens, stating that threats from Hamas or any other group in Gaza will not be tolerated.

In response, 13-year-old Omar Halawa from Khan Younis expressed his perspective on flying kites amidst the conflict, noting that kite flying serves as a source of joy for children in the region. Despite Netanyahu’s warnings, Omar emphasized their innocence as children and their desire for a peaceful life.

Prior to the recent conflict triggered by Hamas, Israeli officials reported incidents of burning kites and balloons causing fires and damage in southern Israel. Recent Israeli strikes resulted in casualties, including children, prompting international concerns and calls for de-escalation.

Hamas condemned Netanyahu’s statements regarding kite flying children, accusing Israel of aggression and violating international laws. The group called for condemnation of Israel’s actions and urged mediators to facilitate a genuine ceasefire in Gaza.

Omar expressed fear of flying kites due to the potential consequences, while his mother, Yasmin Halawa, highlighted the importance of such activities for children’s well-being. Amid security concerns, the children adapted by flying kites near their tents in the evening.
