Two Italian men have been ordered by a civil court in Arezzo, Tuscany, Italy, to compensate the parents of a student who tragically died in Majorca. The incident occurred when the student fell from a hotel balcony while trying to escape a rape attempt. The court ruled that Alessandro Albertoni and Luca Vanneschi must pay a total of over €1 million in compensation.
The victim, Martina Rossi, fell to her death from the sixth floor of a hotel in Palma, leading to a prolonged legal battle. Martina’s mother, Franca Murialdo, is entitled to receive €489,836, while her father, Bruno Rossi, will receive €457,563. Additionally, a joint payment of €74,531 was ordered to be paid to both parents.
Initially, Spanish authorities had closed the case as a suicide, but Martina’s parents pursued justice, resulting in a reexamination of the case in Italy. Albertoni and Vanneschi were convicted in 2018 for attempted sexual violence and related charges, leading to a lengthy legal process that culminated in their recent sentencing to three years in prison for attempted group sexual assault.
Despite the expiration of the criminal charge related to Martina’s death, the court found the two men responsible in civil proceedings. The compensation awarded will be donated to a foundation supporting women affected by violence in Martina’s honor. Bruno Rossi expressed disappointment that the men had not shown remorse or provided adequate compensation, emphasizing that their actions had ongoing repercussions. The judgment is immediately enforceable, though the defendants have the option to appeal the decision.
