A group of Italian teenagers caused a stir during a school trip to Thailand, leading to their country’s embassy issuing a formal apology. Videos shared on social media captured a woman on the BTS SkyTrain reprimanding the rowdy youngsters for their disruptive behavior, emphasizing the cultural norm of avoiding loud behavior in Thailand.

In response to the woman’s admonition, the teenagers sarcastically claimed to be from Thailand and used offensive language towards her. The footage depicted one of the teens making obscene gestures, while others continued to act unruly and disruptive.

The video, which garnered 16 million views, sparked a strong and rapid backlash online. Social media users criticized the teenagers for their lack of manners and respect, with some even identifying and targeting their schools’ social media accounts.

The situation escalated further as individuals gathered outside the teenagers’ hotel, demanding an apology for their behavior. In light of the international outrage, the Italian embassy in Bangkok released a video featuring members of the group offering heartfelt apologies to the Thai people and culture for their actions.

The apology video included statements expressing regret and acknowledging the need for respect towards Thai customs. The group members vowed to leave Thailand promptly and undergo additional cultural sensitivity training to prevent similar incidents in the future.
