An upset Jet2 passenger has shared their experience of having to spend a night on the cold airport floor after the airline failed to provide hotel accommodation following a flight cancellation from Lanzarote to Manchester due to adverse weather conditions. While some fortunate travelers were accommodated in a hotel, others, including families with children, were left without provisions.
According to one traveler, passengers who were not allocated hotel rooms were informed that there were limited nearby accommodation options, leaving them with no choice but to sleep on the airport floor. Carl Bickerton, aged 62, from Stockport, was among those affected, along with his wife and 16-year-old son, who endured a delay of approximately 16 hours before finally departing for home.
Describing the chaotic situation, Bickerton recounted boarding the flight only to remain seated for four hours before being taken back to the terminal without clear communication. Passengers, including children, were allowed to visit the cockpit in an effort to boost morale during the extended delay.
Following their return to the terminal, attempts to secure hotel rooms were met with challenges as the airport closed at midnight. Some passengers, including those with special needs, faced difficulties in finding suitable accommodation, leading to heightened tensions among stranded travelers. Despite receiving 20 Euro vouchers for meals and facing a night of uncertainty, passengers were eventually informed about their rescheduled flight for the next day.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Bickerton mentioned that while some passengers were transferred to hotels, others, like himself, had to endure a night at the airport. He praised the efforts of a Jet2 manager who assisted in arranging accommodations, but highlighted the distress experienced by passengers in need of medication and emotional support.
As the situation unfolded, passengers were left wondering about the status of their flight, receiving updates only in the early hours of the morning. Bickerton expressed his confusion over the handling of the situation and the lack of clarity provided to passengers during the ordeal.
Jet2 has been contacted for a response, while a spokesperson for César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport acknowledged the weather-related disruptions and emphasized that passenger support falls under the airlines’ jurisdiction, with the airport offering assistance to facilitate operations.
