“John Lewis Employees to Receive £1,600 Annual Pay Increase”

Published on

Around 65,000 employees at the John Lewis company are set to receive a substantial pay increase in April. The John Lewis Partnership, which includes department stores and Waitrose supermarkets, announced that shop floor wages will go up by nearly 7%, equivalent to around £1,600 annually for full-time employees. The staff at John Lewis, referred to as partners due to the unique employee ownership structure of the business, will be the beneficiaries of this raise.

While the pay rise has been confirmed, there is uncertainty regarding whether employees will receive a bonus this year, as no bonuses have been granted since 2022. Jason Tarry, the chair of the partnership, expressed the commitment to provide a bonus as soon as feasible. The decision on the bonus will be made by the Board in March, separate from the recent pay announcement.

The new pay structure will benefit 99.6% of partners at John Lewis, amounting to a total investment of £108 million. Starting April 1, employees working on the shop floor in both John Lewis and Waitrose locations will see a 6.9% raise, with minimum hourly rates increasing to £13.25 nationwide and £14.80 in stores within the M25 area.

For partners who acquire additional skills and take on specialized roles, pay rates will rise to £14.31 per hour, reaching £15.98 within the M25. These increases are partly in response to the higher statutory National Living Wage effective from April, increasing by 4.1% to £12.71 per hour for workers aged 21 and above.

Helen Webb, the chief people officer at the John Lewis Partnership, emphasized the importance of investing in employees, stating that this pay raise reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to partner compensation. The aim is to provide partners with consistent monthly pay increases as part of the long-term investment in the partnership’s future.

Apart from the salary hike, employees at the Partnership enjoy various benefits, including discounts at John Lewis and Waitrose, up to a 12% pension contribution, discounted rates at affiliated hotels, financial support for personal development and leisure activities, subsidized meals, and a comprehensive health and wellbeing program that includes options for self-referral to physiotherapy and counseling services.

Earlier in September, the Partnership reported a significant increase in losses for the six months ending in July, attributing the rise to restructuring costs and new tax and regulatory expenses. The group operates 36 department stores and over 300 Waitrose supermarkets, striving to revitalize its financial performance under the leadership of Jason Tarry and managing director Peter Ruis.
