Judi Dench’s Heartfelt Tribute: Trees in Memory of Friends

Published on

Judi Dench recently shared a poignant revelation about the residence she and her late spouse purchased over forty years ago. During a heartfelt conversation with BBC Radio 2’s Jo Whiley, Dench discussed the sentimental keepsakes in her garden.

While seated with Jo in her expansive and picturesque garden, Dench disclosed the presence of water voles, ducks, deer, and rabbits around the garden pond. The discussion then shifted to the trees Dench planted in memory of dear friends, such as renowned actors Maggie Smith, Donald Sinden, Bernard Culshaw, and John Stride.

In a recent episode of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS)’s Roots show on YouTube, Dench elaborated on her tradition of planting trees in honor of departed friends. She explained that each tree symbolizes a cherished individual, like John Stride, who had a significant impact on her life.

During the conversation, Jo admired a magnificent magnolia tree in bloom in Dench’s garden. Dench then recounted the story behind each tree, including one dedicated to a close friend of her brother’s named Dingo.

Dench also mentioned receiving a Sycamore Gap tree as a gift and being offered an oak tree from Sherwood Forest, which she described as remarkable. When asked about a tree for her late husband, Michael Williams, Dench revealed that there is a tree he adored planted on the property.

Reflecting on her abode near Outwood, Surrey, Dench expressed how the familiar surroundings and memories of her late husband bring her solace. Her historic farmhouse, constructed in 1497 and estimated at £8 million, features various facilities like a barn, cottage, workshops, and a swimming pool.

In a previous interview in 2022, Dench humorously mentioned battling mice that had taken residence in her home during lockdown. Despite facing some maintenance challenges, she finds comfort and fond memories within her cherished home.
