“Keir Starmer to Address Middle East Conflict in Press Conference”

Published on

Keir Starmer is set to provide updates on the Middle East situation in a press conference from Downing Street, addressing the ongoing conflict in the region. The Prime Minister is anticipated to field questions at around 2pm regarding the escalating situation, with the US and Israel conducting military actions against the Iranian regime. The UK has granted permission for the US to utilize British military bases for defensive operations targeting Iranian missile sites to safeguard Middle Eastern nations.

In related news, the first government evacuation flight intended for 180 stranded Brits in the Middle East faced delays as technical issues prevented its departure from Muscat, Oman. Despite the setback, the flight is now scheduled to take off later today.

According to Minister Hamish Falconer, the UK is restocking its air defense missiles following recent missions. Additional sorties were conducted overnight with Typhoons defending Qatar and F35s supporting regional partners. Efforts are underway to resupply air defense missiles, while Wildcat helicopters equipped with anti-drone capabilities are stationed in the eastern Mediterranean. HMS Dragon will soon be deployed to the region as well.

Notably, over 4,000 individuals arrived in the UK from various Middle Eastern countries on Wednesday, addressing a significant consular challenge. Foreign Office Minister Hamish Falconer emphasized the complexities of repatriating such large numbers amidst airspace restrictions, highlighting ongoing efforts to ensure safe and swift returns.

UK Defense Secretary John Healey engaged with Cypriot counterpart Vasilis Palmas to strengthen air defenses in support of mutual security interests. Responding to criticisms of military asset availability in the Middle East after a drone incident at RAF Akrotiri, the PM’s spokesman reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to bolstering regional defenses.

Cyprus’s high commissioner to the UK underscored the importance of British military presence in safeguarding the island, following an attack on RAF Akrotiri by an Iranian drone. While addressing the evolving crisis, Minister Hamish Falconer assured British nationals in Oman of forthcoming evacuation flights as arrangements progress.

The Prime Minister has faced scrutiny for not participating in military actions alongside the US and Israel against Tehran. Keir Starmer reiterated a cautious approach, emphasizing the need for a lawful basis and strategic plan before committing to warfare.
