Keir Starmer has affirmed his commitment to remain in his position despite Andy Burnham’s announcement that he would enter a leadership race upon becoming an MP.
The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of avoiding internal conflicts within the government amidst what he described as the most challenging and uncertain global circumstances in recent memory.
In preparation for the Makerfield by-election in less than two weeks, Mr. Burnham expressed his intent to participate in a leadership competition if one is initiated. He criticized the government for imposing excessive taxes on small businesses and pledged to reduce rates for pubs, clubs, and exempt numerous small enterprises from tax obligations.
Highlighting the need to re-engage Labour with the working class, Mr. Burnham emphasized the significance of supporting local family-owned businesses and high streets.
Contrary to speculations of stepping down, the Prime Minister reiterated his commitment to fulfilling the electoral mandate won in 2024, stating that it is crucial to focus on governing rather than engaging in internal disputes within the Labour Party.
Poll results suggest that Mr. Burnham is poised to win the upcoming by-election on June 18. He proposed significant policy changes, including advocating for a 20% reduction in business rates for pubs and clubs and exempting family-run businesses from such taxes.
To challenge Mr. Starmer, a contender would need backing from 81 MPs. Supporters of Mr. Burnham are confident of garnering sufficient support, with former Health Secretary Wes Streeting also expressing intentions to contest for leadership.
During a recent appearance on BBC Question Time, Mr. Burnham hinted at joining a leadership contest, contingent upon convincing Parliamentary Labour Party members to support his candidacy.
While Labour’s Josh Simons secured victory in the 2024 general election with a substantial majority, Reform recently swept all available council seats in the local elections.
Amidst discussions of potential leadership challenges, it has been emphasized that any contest would be a significant distraction at this juncture. The Prime Minister has affirmed his readiness to participate should a contest ensue.
