Keir Starmer’s administration is set to continue working on advancing the delayed Hillsborough legislation during the upcoming parliamentary session. This effort is taking place as the government readies to prorogue Parliament in preparation for May’s King Speech, which will outline the legislative priorities for the upcoming year.

Commons leader Sir Alan Campbell informed Members of Parliament that the Hillsborough law will undergo a carry-over motion on Monday to ensure its progression to the next session. The proposed law, officially known as the Public Office (Accountability) Bill, aims to introduce a legal obligation of “duty of candor” for public officials to act honestly, under the threat of criminal penalties. This bill faced a setback in January due to disagreements over an amendment related to its application to security services, like MI5.

Recent reports indicated progress in negotiations with Hillsborough families, yet any revisions from the government remain undisclosed. Labour MP Ian Byrne, who was present at Hillsborough during the tragic incident, expressed relief over the commitment to carry over the legislation but urged the government to expedite the process.

During discussions in the Commons, Mr. Byrne emphasized the importance of delivering the Hillsborough law promptly without exemptions for intelligence and security services, as originally pledged. In response, Sir Alan acknowledged the personal significance of the issue to Mr. Byrne and expressed satisfaction with the progress made.

Hillsborough campaigner Margaret Aspinall has urged Mr. Starmer to fulfill his promise by swiftly enacting a law to prevent future state cover-ups. Aspinall, who lost her son in the Hillsborough disaster, emphasized the urgency of passing the legislation as pledged by the Prime Minister.
