In a lengthy virtual meeting, the board decided to include Trump’s name on the building’s facade as “The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Restored and Renovated By President Donald J. Trump.” Additionally, they proposed naming the plaza in front of the center after Trump and planning a two-year closure for significant renovations.
Representative Joyce Beatty, an Ohio Democrat and ex-officio board member, along with her legal team, characterized these changes as a bold challenge to U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper. Cooper had previously ruled in May that Trump’s name on the building was unlawfully added and ordered its removal, a decision upheld despite the administration’s appeals. He also halted the planned closure in July, criticizing the board’s decision as uninformed.
Beatty condemned the recent developments as an attempt to circumvent the court’s judgment and violate congressional statutes. The Kennedy Center did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The board meeting primarily deliberated on the necessary closures for safety-focused renovations, offering three options to address the infrastructure needs.
