Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime exited the U.S. Open on Wednesday after losing his second-round match to Russia’s Karen Khachanov in four sets. Auger-Aliassime, the No. 3 seed from Montreal, claimed the first set with a 7-6 (5) tiebreak but then dropped the following three sets 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
Khachanov, ranked 50th in the world, managed to break Auger-Aliassime’s serve seven times on the court, saving seven out of nine break points. This victory marked only Khachanov’s second top-10 win at a Grand Slam event.
Throughout the match, Auger-Aliassime struggled as Khachanov capitalized on the Canadian’s errors. Khachanov dominated the sets, breaking serve and maintaining control to secure the win. The Russian’s strong performance included a commanding lead in the fourth set, sealing the match with a powerful serve that Auger-Aliassime couldn’t return.
Next, Khachanov will face either Benjamin Bonzi from France or Ignacio Buse from Peru in the upcoming rounds. Other notable players advancing in the U.S. Open include Naomi Osaka, Coco Gauff, Madison Keys, and Alexander Zverev, while some top-seeded players faced early exits in the tournament.
