Kim Kardashian made a bold statement at the recent Met Gala in New York with her eye-catching metallic orange fibreglass breastplate. The final touches to her striking outfit were done by a Kent auto repair shop called MPS Body & Paint in Lydd.
The garage’s owner, Martyn Smith, revealed that he was approached by the creators of Kardashian’s outfit, Keir Malem and Patrick Whitaker, who had previously had their cars painted at his shop. Smith, who completed the high-profile job in just 24 hours, was unaware of the celebrity client until the day of collection and was sworn to secrecy.
The breastplate worn by Kardashian was crafted based on a 1969 sculpture by artist Allen Jones, with the leather skirt painted by the 88-year-old artist himself. The entire outfit, which took three weeks to complete, was personally fitted on Kardashian during two trips to England.
According to Malem, Kardashian was hands-on and easy to work with, reaching out directly for the project. Smith, though missing the Gala coverage due to an early night, expressed pride in his work, saying the outfit looked as stunning on Kardashian as it did on the day he finished it.
In a Vogue livestream, Kardashian explained that the inspiration behind her look was the artist Allen Jones and his iconic body plates from the 1960s. This isn’t the first time Kardashian has made headlines at the Met Gala, with previous appearances showcasing her daring fashion choices.
