Renowned comedian Freddie Starr received a heartfelt send-off in his hometown thanks to a kind stranger who volunteered to cover the expenses. The beloved performer, known for his successful TV appearances on both the BBC and ITV, passed away on this day in 2019 (9 May) reportedly with financial struggles despite his previous wealth amassed during the 1970s and 80s.
Upon his death at the age of 76, he was residing in a modest one-bedroom apartment on the Costa del Sol in Spain and was at risk of losing his home.
There were concerns that Starr might have a basic, taxpayer-funded funeral in Spain, which is typically a simple burial for individuals without financial means, often in an unmarked or shared grave – a stark contrast to his desire for a burial in his homeland.
His caregiver, Nelly Georgieva from Bulgaria, who found his body, mentioned that she had lost contact with his family for many years, leaving his funeral arrangements uncertain until a compassionate stranger intervened, as reported by the Daily Record.
Expressing concerns, Nelly stated: “Freddie had negative feelings about his home country, feeling abandoned by the British people. It would be tragic if Freddie were to be buried in a pauper’s grave. I don’t want that to happen, but I fear objection from his relatives if I take action,” she added. Starr, survived by six children, three ex-partners, and a widow, passed away with debts and no funeral arrangements.
With no one stepping forward to cover the expenses, Michael Fogg, a funeral director from Sheffield who had never met Starr, graciously offered to bring him back to his home country and organize his funeral without seeking reimbursement from the family.
Explaining his altruistic gesture, Michael remarked: “Anyone who can make a funeral director laugh must be an exceptional comedian. Freddie Starr could always make me laugh. It wouldn’t be right for him to be buried abroad; he deserves to return to his own land.”
His act of kindness ensured that Starr was repatriated to the UK, granting him the dignified burial many believed he should have. Responding to critics, Michael stated: “It’s my money, my business, and that’s how I choose to spend it. He should be reunited with his loved ones and family. He shouldn’t be laid to rest in a foreign country; he belongs in his homeland.”
