“King Charles’ US Visit: Trump’s Initial Disinterest”

Published on

King Charles concluded a rapid four-day official visit to the United States, accompanied by Queen Camilla, during which they were hosted by the President and First Lady in Washington DC. President Trump praised the monarch effusively, referring to him as “fantastic,” “brave,” and hailing him as “the greatest King.”

However, a recent book reveals a contrasting initial impression of Charles by Trump when they first met in 2019 at Clarence House, where they engaged in a conversation over tea. Former White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham disclosed that Trump found the meeting “terrible,” a sentiment echoed in a new book by Washington Bureau Chief Susan Page titled “The Queen and Her Presidents.”

According to Page’s book, Trump found Charles “boring” during their initial encounter, expressing frustration that their discussion focused solely on climate change. The book cites a statement from The Telegraph, quoting Trump’s discontent with the conversation’s emphasis on climate change.

Despite Trump’s initial disinterest in Charles during their first meeting, he later acknowledged the King’s dedication to climate change issues in an interview with ITV. Trump commended Charles for his commitment to ensuring a favorable climate for future generations, indicating a shift in his perception over time.

In the aftermath of their initial meeting, Trump’s opinion of Charles evolved positively, culminating in praise for the monarch’s successful visit to the US. Trump announced the lifting of Scottish whisky tariffs as a gesture towards Charles, attributing the decision to the King’s influence, as expressed in his online post.

Following the conclusion of the historic visit, a senior royal aide affirmed the genuine and respectful relationship between Charles and Trump, emphasizing the warmth and mutual respect shared between the two leaders. The aide highlighted the positive dynamics not only between the King and the President but also among all four individuals involved, underscoring the cordiality observed in both public and private interactions.
