Kyiv authorities have reported the discovery of “hazardous radiation” on debris from a Russian missile suspected to contain uranium warhead components. The concerning find was linked to Vladimir Putin’s R-60 air-to-air missile, which was utilized in an assault on Chernihiv Oblast last month. Experts have identified an elevated gamma radiation level of 12 µSv/h, posing a significant health risk to individuals.
The R-60 missile, designed as an infrared-homing heat-seeking weapon, was affixed to a modified Shahed-136 to protect against low-flying Ukrainian aircraft and interceptor helicopters. According to Ukraine, the missile was located in Kamka on April 7 and displayed traces of uranium-235 and uranium-238 commonly found in depleted uranium elements.
In response to the alarming revelation, a war crimes inquiry has been initiated into the matter. The Security Service of Ukraine disclosed detecting heightened radiation levels on the debris and took precautions to prevent further exposure to civilians.
Officials from Ukraine emphasized the importance of caution upon encountering drone debris, missiles, or ammunition due to the recent findings. They highlighted the increased danger posed by damaged or burnt ammunition, which can release radioactive substances.
Meanwhile, Russian Armed Forces have commenced a three-day nuclear weapons exercise in Belarus amid suspicions of a potential invasion of Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania by Putin. The drills involve over 64,000 military personnel and more than 7,800 units of equipment, aiming to bolster readiness in utilizing modern destructive means, including special ammunition.
Residents in Belarus have been prohibited from accessing forests near the borders with Lithuania, Poland, and Ukraine during the exercises. In a separate event, Putin showcased an apparent physical discomfort while greeting Xi Jinping in Beijing, with speculation arising over his use of platform shoes to match Xi’s height during the encounter. Ukrainian sources humorously commented on the incident, further highlighting the political tensions at play.
