Labour MP Joani Reid has decided to temporarily step back from her role within the Labour party until internal investigations are completed. This decision follows the arrest of her husband, David Taylor, on suspicion of espionage for China. Despite not being personally implicated in any wrongdoing, Ms. Reid, representing East Kilbride and Strathaven, announced her voluntary suspension from the party led by Sir Keir Starmer.

In a statement, Ms. Reid expressed her commitment to cooperate fully with the ongoing inquiry and emphasized that she will refrain from acting as a Labour MP until the investigation is finalized. The Labour Party confirmed her cooperation and stated that she was fully engaged in the process.

Addressing the recent events, Ms. Reid acknowledged the challenging nature of the situation, labeling it as the “worst week” of her life. She made it clear that she stands innocent of any allegations or police investigations. Ms. Reid stressed her dedication to her constituents and the Labour Party, underscoring the privilege it has been to serve them.

The arrests also included Matthew Alpin, a former Labour press officer, and Steve Jones, a former special adviser for the Welsh Government, alongside Mr. Taylor. All three individuals were accused of assisting a foreign intelligence service and were subsequently released on bail. The arrests were carried out by counter-terrorism units in London and Wales, with subsequent searches at various locations including residences in London, East Kilbride, and Cardiff.

The trio is scheduled to appear in court in May, with ongoing investigations conducted by a collaborative effort between Metropolitan, Scottish, and Welsh counter-terror teams. Commander Helen Flanagan of Counter Terrorism Policing London assured the public that there was no immediate or direct threat related to the arrests.
