“Labour Plans Pub Aid Amid Crisis: 2 Closures Daily”

Published on

Labour is set to unveil assistance for pubs in crisis across Britain, with reports indicating that two pubs are closing down each day. The government is anticipated to introduce a set of measures as early as Tuesday in response to increasing pressure to address an impending tax hike.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has acknowledged the struggles faced by pub owners and is prepared to take action, particularly concerning business rates. The specifics of the forthcoming announcement remain uncertain, with questions arising about whether it will entail temporary support rather than permanent tax relief, a move the industry is urgently calling for to prevent further closures.

Recent data disclosed that 188 pubs shut down in the last quarter of 2025. The majority of closures, totaling 123, involved community pubs that heavily rely on beverage sales for sustenance. Additionally, the number of food-oriented pubs decreased by 56, along with nine high street locations, as per a report by NIQ and CGA Intelligence.

The Mirror has been advocating for the pub industry through its Your Pub Needs You campaign, advocating for aid to landlords and the communities they serve. While any additional support will be welcomed, many within the pub sector argue that decisive measures are essential to stem the tide of closures, which have surpassed 2,000 since the beginning of 2020.

Pubs are grappling with a host of challenges, from shifting consumer habits to rising wages and escalating energy expenses. However, the most immediate concern is the anticipated spike in business rates due to cuts in Covid-related relief and forthcoming revaluations in April.

The Treasury asserts it is already offering a £4.3 billion support package to curb increases in pub bills. The rumored assistance for pubs has triggered calls for similar aid to be extended to other businesses burdened by rates.

According to NIQ data, the number of hospitality establishments in the UK decreased by 382 between September and December, totaling 98,914, equating to over four net closures daily. Over 240 various types of restaurants closed within the previous three months, despite this period traditionally being lucrative for pubs and eateries.

Concerns mount that closure rates could escalate in the new year as financially constrained customers curtail spending. NIQ’s findings also revealed the closure of 28 nightclubs and 39 sports and social clubs in the past year.

Karl Chessell from NIQ expressed worry over the accelerated closures in the final quarter of 2025, attributing it to the relentless surge in operating costs. He emphasized that despite the government’s recent adjustments on pub rates, conditions are unlikely to ease in 2026, with weak business confidence and sales growth. Without enhanced support and increased consumer spending, hundreds more closures are anticipated in the coming months.

A spokesperson from the Treasury affirmed the government’s commitment to supporting pubs, highlighting the £4.3 billion aid package announced in the Budget as a crucial step to shield most ratepayers from business rates hikes.
