A British soldier, identified as Lance Corporal James Freeman of the Royal Anglian Regiment, tragically lost his life in a training incident in Erbil, Iraq. The Ministry of Defence confirmed the event, which occurred during routine training activity for Operation Shader, the UK’s effort against the Islamic State.
The incident also claimed the life of an American soldier, as reported by the US Army. The MoD expressed deep regret over the loss and extended condolences to the family and friends of L/Cpl Freeman. Described as a dedicated and experienced soldier with a promising career, Freeman had served in various locations including South Sudan, Cyprus, Iraq, the Falklands, Jordan, Romania, and Kenya.
Defence Secretary John Healey mourned the passing of Freeman, emphasizing the support for his loved ones during this challenging time. Lieutenant Samuel Frost, Freeman’s Platoon Commander, praised him as an exceptional soldier, highlighting his impact within the Company. Corporal William Thorpe remembered Freeman as his best friend and a committed professional who played a significant role in his life.
